Cisco SPA500 Phones Are End-of-Life — Plan Your Move

Cisco SPA500 IP phones are end-of-life and unsupported, with unpatched critical flaws. Move to a supported system and keep your numbers. Melbourne team.

If your business is still running Cisco SPA500 series desk phones — the SPA502G, SPA504G, SPA508G, SPA509G, SPA512G or SPA525G2 — they have reached the end of the road. Cisco has stopped selling them and, as of 31 May 2025, no longer provides any support, and it has confirmed it will not fix the critical security flaws found in these phones. SIP Connect moves you off the SPA500 series cleanly, onto a currently supported system that costs less and does more.

The honest situation

Cisco discontinued the entire Small Business SPA500 series. The first selected models reached end-of-sale on 11 February 2019, and the last remaining models stopped being sold on 1 June 2020. The final date of any Cisco support was 31 May 2025 — that date has passed, so these phones are now fully unsupported, with no software updates, no security fixes and an expired provisioning certificate.

This matters because of what Cisco disclosed in August 2024. A Cisco security advisory revealed five vulnerabilities in the SPA300/SPA500 web management interface. Three of them (CVE-2024-20450, CVE-2024-20452 and CVE-2024-20454) are rated Critical at CVSS 9.8 and could let an unauthenticated, remote attacker run commands on the phone with root-level access; two more cause denial of service. Cisco stated it has not released and will not release a patch, because the products are end-of-life — and there are no workarounds. In plain terms: phones sitting on your network with known, unfixable critical holes are a risk worth removing while you still have time to plan.

Why move with a local team

To be clear, SIP Connect does not sell the SPA500 series — we specialise in migrating businesses off ageing, unsupported hardware and onto something built for the next decade. We're vendor-neutral, so we recommend the platform that genuinely fits how you work, not the one we're tied to. We are an authorised Yealink reseller and a 3CX Partner, so we know the known-good replacement handsets inside out. And when you call, you reach a real person in Greensborough — no offshore call centre, no robots. Our team brings over 80 years of combined industry experience, and customers rate us 5.0 on Google.

Your migration options

We move SPA500-stranded businesses onto the system that actually suits them:

  • 3CX — feature-rich and cost-cutting, hosted or on-premise. Licensed by simultaneous calls rather than per extension, with free inter-office calls and video conferencing built in. Pairs neatly with supported Yealink desk phones.
  • Hosted & Cloud PBX — every enterprise calling feature, with nothing on-site to maintain or replace, and handsets that still receive firmware and security updates.
  • Microsoft Teams calling — if your team already lives in Teams, Direct Routing turns it into your phone system, with no SBC for you to manage.

Need only the lines underneath, or want to keep an existing modern PBX? We also supply SIP trunks to carry your calls. For the bigger picture on retiring obsolete gear, see our legacy phone system replacement hub.

A migration planned to avoid downtime

We keep your existing numbers, plan the cutover around your trading hours, train your staff and switch you over cleanly — often live in days, not weeks. We handle the number porting so nothing drops. Coming off the SPA500 series is also the moment to stop overpaying: our bill reviews have identified savings of up to 65%.

One team for phones and the internet underneath

Because we also supply the connection your new system runs on — business NBN, gigabit fibre or 5G fixed wireless, with internet failover if you need calls to stay up no matter what — the whole setup is tuned to work together, monitored 24/7, and backed by one local team. No finger-pointing between providers when something needs a hand.

Real Connections. Real Easy. Send us a recent bill and we'll show you exactly what a clean move off your Cisco SPA500 phones looks like — and what it saves.

Frequently asked questions

Are Cisco SPA500 series phones still supported?

No. Cisco stopped selling the SPA500 series (the last models on 1 June 2020) and the final date of any Cisco support was 31 May 2025. They now receive no software or security updates of any kind, so the dependable path is to plan a move to a currently supported phone.

Do the SPA500 security flaws really matter for my business?

They can. In August 2024 Cisco disclosed five vulnerabilities in the SPA500 web interface — three rated Critical (CVSS 9.8) that could let a remote attacker run commands on the phone with root access. Cisco has confirmed it will not issue a patch and there are no workarounds, so the only fix is to retire the phones.

Will moving off the SPA500 disrupt my business?

Done properly, no. We port your existing numbers and schedule the switch so calls keep flowing, and most migrations are live in days, not weeks. Your customers won't notice a thing — except that you answer faster.

What will it cost to replace my Cisco SPA500 phones?

Less than you'd expect, and usually less than you're paying now. Pricing depends on your team size and the platform that fits — so the honest way to a real number is a free bill analysis. Call us on 1300 747 266 or send a recent bill and we'll show you the setup and the savings, with no obligation. If we can't save you money, we'll tell you straight.
